Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts under fire again ahead of 2026 season

The Philadelphia Eagles enter training camp with Jalen Hurts under the microscope once more after a first-round playoff exit in January.

What did Michael Irvin say about Jalen Hurts?

Former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin lit up Philadelphia on July 12 with blunt praise for Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Irvin, in town for a rare appearance, called the treatment of Hurts “mind-blowing.” He pointed to Hurts’ Super Bowl MVP résumé and two straight trips to the title game as proof the criticism has gone too far.

“What I’m shocked about is the treatment of Jalen Hurts,” Irvin told reporters. “Why is that like this, right? Why are you guys trying to get rid of Jalen Hurts already? Blows my mind.”

Why Jalen Hurts keeps drawing heat in Philly

Hurts, 27, has absorbed steady skepticism since the Eagles drafted him in 2020. Back then, Carson Wentz still owned the roster. But Hurts seized the job in 2021 and hasn’t looked back. The Eagles have posted a winning record every season since, made the playoffs five straight years, and won Super Bowl LIX in 2024.

On the field, Hurts has been elite. He’s 57-25 as a starter, completing 64.4% of his passes for 110 touchdowns against 45 picks. He’s also a dual threat, with 3,554 rushing yards and 63 touchdowns on the ground.

What’s next for the Philadelphia Eagles?

Training camp looms, and the Eagles are already coping with the loss of All-Pro receiver A.J. Brown. Irvin worries the offense could stall without its top target. He stressed the need for a go-to guy who can bail out broken plays when the new scheme stalls.

The Eagles sit third in the NFC with an 11-6 record and are on a three-game losing streak. They open the 2026 slate on September 13 against the Washington Commanders.
